Biography

Peter Stallybrass is the Walter H. Annenberg Professor Emeritus in the Department of English at the University of Pennsylvania, where he has played a significant role in shaping the study of material texts and early modern literature. He has dedicated over twenty years to directing the Seminar on the History of Material Texts, co-editing the Material Texts series published by the University of Pennsylvania Press. Stallybrass has a fascinating background, having begun his academic career after initially training as a mortician. He developed a lifelong passion for literature, which drew him into a profound engagement with Fyodor Dostoevsky's novels. His teaching and research interests span early modern literature, drama, and cultural history, particularly focusing on the intersections of text and materiality. He has been a central figure in the development of graduate programs in Renaissance Studies and Critical Theory and has co-founded the Popular Literature Group at the Centre for Social History in Oxford.
