Biography

Peter Stempel is an associate professor in the Department of Landscape Architecture at Penn State University. His research is focused on realizing the transformative potential of realistic visualizations in hazard risk communication and public engagement. He works with physical and hydrodynamic models and qualitative data, engaging stakeholders through effective visualizations. Stempel has collaborated on interdisciplinary projects with the National Park Service and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. As a sculptor and activist, he has dedicated his career to public engagement in rural communities in the southwestern United States and has developed inclusive curricula aimed at training designers to collaborate with scientists and policymakers on climate adaptation issues. With 25 years of design teaching experience, Stempel employs innovative and asset-based pedagogies to empower students. He holds a Ph.D. in Marine Affairs from the University of Rhode Island and a B.F.A. and B.Arch. from the Rhode Island School of Design. His previous roles include Principal at Stempel Form PC Architects and Executive Director of Form 501c3, focusing on community-based land use solutions.
