Dr. Peter Stewart

Biography

Peter Stewart is a Professor of Ancient Art at the University of Oxford, the Director of the Classical Art Research Centre, and a Fellow of Wolfson College. He earned his MA, MPhil, and PhD from Clare College, Cambridge, before moving to Oxford in 2011. He previously served as a Reader in Classical Art at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London and acted as Dean during the academic year 2010-11. Stewart has also taught at the University of Cambridge and Reading University, where he held the position of Lecturer in Classics and Curator of the Ure Museum of Greek Archaeology. His research specialization mainly focuses on ancient sculpture, Roman provincial art, ancient Greek textile art, and the connections between different art traditions across ancient Eurasia. His publications include 'Statues and Roman Society: Representation and Response' (Oxford, 2003), 'Social History of Roman Art' (Cambridge, 2008), 'Catalogue of the Sculpture Collection at Wilton House' (Oxford, 2020), and 'Gandharan Art in the Classical World: A Short Introduction' (Oxford, 2023). As the Director of the Classical Art Research Centre, he oversees the Beazley Archive and contributes to various subjects concerning the history of ancient art.
