Biography

Peter Stys is a distinguished neurologist and neuroscientist based at the University of Calgary's Cumming School of Medicine. He completed his medical studies at the University of Ottawa and pursued specialty training in neurology at the University of Toronto. Following this, he engaged in post-doctoral studies at Yale University, supported by a Centennial Fellowship from the Medical Research Council of Canada (CIHR). In 1992, he returned to Canada to establish his own research laboratory and clinical practice at the Civic Campus of the Ottawa Hospital. In 2007, he joined the Hotchkiss Brain Institute at the University of Calgary. Renowned for his research on the pathophysiological mechanisms of white matter injury due to stroke and trauma, Dr. Stys has developed advanced imaging techniques to study myelinated axons and glial cells. His team has uncovered critical mechanisms of axo-glial damage related to ischemia and excitotoxicity, laying the groundwork for potential therapeutic interventions in acute stroke and spinal cord injury. Dr. Stys has published 88 peer-reviewed articles and has been awarded several prestigious titles, including the Dr. Frank LeBlanc Chair in Spinal Cord Research and Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Axo-glial Biology.
