Dr. Peter Thompson completed his Bachelor of Science in Molecular Genetics and a Master of Science in Molecular Biology at the University of Alberta. He earned his PhD in Medical Genetics from the University of British Columbia, where he investigated mechanisms of epigenetic regulation affecting fate decisions in embryonic stem cells. After receiving numerous research awards during his graduate training, including the NSERC Postgraduate Scholarship, he conducted postdoctoral training at the Diabetes Center, University of California San Francisco. Here, he shifted his focus toward islet biology and Type 1 Diabetes, where he discovered novel stress responses in beta cells. In 2020, he joined the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physiology and Pathophysiology and became the principal investigator at the Children's Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba. His research program aims to develop therapies that prevent the progression of Type 1 Diabetes and restore beta cell function. Dr. Thompson continues to accept graduate students and has been recognized for his research contributions with multiple awards, including the Ken Hughes Young Investigator Award from the University of Manitoba in 2023.
