Dr. Peter Toohey

Biography

Peter Toohey is a Professor at the University of Calgary specializing in Classics. He has a robust academic background, with a Bachelor of Arts in Classics and a Master of Arts in Classics from Monash University, finished in 1972 and 1974 respectively. He furthered his studies by earning a Doctorate in Philosophy in Classics from the University of Toronto in 1978. His research interests encompass Greek and Roman Epic Poetry, the History of Emotions, Cultural History, Medicine, Gender and Sexuality, as well as the History of Madness. This diverse range of interests highlights his commitment to exploring the complexities of ancient cultures through various lenses. Professor Toohey actively participates in university strategic initiatives and teaches numerous courses, including graduate seminars in Greek Poetry and undergraduate levels of Greek Literature and Classical Literature. He emphasizes critical thinking and analysis of classical texts in his teachings, encouraging students to engage deeply with the literature.
