Biography

Peter Tuthill is an expert in astrophysical imaging, focusing on the study of stars and their immediate environments with unprecedented resolution. After obtaining undergraduate degrees in physics from the University of Queensland and the Australian National University, Peter moved to Cambridge University where he graduated with a PhD in 1995. For five years, he worked as a Research Astronomer at the University of California, Berkeley, in a research group led by Nobel Laureate, Professor Charles Townes. Peter returned to Australia in the millennium and has since held several Australian Research Council fellowships, currently serving as a Future Fellow. He works at the Sydney Institute of Astronomy, one of the largest astrophysics groups in the country, and served as its director from 2010 to 2015. His research themes include astronomical imaging, interferometry, and advanced astronomical instrumentation, utilizing technologies that allow a deeper understanding of the life cycle of stars and the formation of planetary systems. Peter is actively involved in various projects with leading world observatories, further advancing the field of exoplanetary detection and characterization.
