Biography

Peter M. Ward earned his Ph.D. in geography from the University of Liverpool in 1976. He has held senior teaching positions at universities in London and Cambridge before joining the University of Texas at Austin in 1991 as a Professor in the Department of Sociology and at the Lyndon B Johnson School of Public Affairs. He served as the Director of the Mexican Center at the Institute of Latin American Studies at UT Austin from 1992 to 1996 and again from 2000 to 2005. In 2000, he was appointed the C.B. Smith Sr. Centennial Chair in US-Mexico Relations. His research interests include Latin American urbanization, contemporary Mexican politics, community development, and housing policy in developing countries, with a specific focus on planning in Mexico City and colonia-type housing in the United States. Ward has also acted as an advisor on housing policy for the Ministry of Human Settlements and Public Works in Mexico from 1978 to 1980. He co-authored the book 'Governance Americas', published by the University of Notre Dame Press in 2008.
