Biography

Peter Wothers is a Professor at the University of Cambridge in the Yusuf Hamied Department of Chemistry and a Fellow at St Catharine's College. He teaches Natural Science undergraduates and has been involved in numerous projects aimed at bridging the transition from sixth form to university. He played a key role in developing the syllabus for the Chemistry Pre-University qualification and served as the Senior Examiner for the Chemistry STEP, replacing the Advanced Extension Awards. Peter is heavily involved in outreach efforts to promote chemistry to young students and the public, including organizing annual Chemistry Open Days and the Chemistry Olympiad. He chaired the Steering Committee for the 41st International Chemistry Olympiad held in Cambridge in 2009. His popular science writing includes co-authoring the textbook 'Organic Chemistry' and publishing 'Antimony, Gold Jupiter's Wolf' with Oxford University Press in 2019. He also delivered the Sandars' Lectures at St Catharine's College, using his collection of early works on chemistry, particularly those written by women chemists before Marie Curie.
