Biography

Dr. Peter Zahradka completed his Bachelor of Science and PhD degrees in biochemistry at the University of Western Ontario. He undertook post-doctoral training at Stanford University in pathology and at the University of Guelph in molecular biology and genetics, enhancing his research background in cell proliferation and differentiation. After a two-year term as an assistant professor in the chemistry and biochemistry department at the University of Guelph, he moved to the University of Manitoba to join the physiology department. His lab, part of the division of cardiovascular sciences at the St. Boniface Research Centre, shifted research directions to investigate the modulation of smooth muscle cell phenotype. His work led to the identification of a novel agent capable of preventing restenosis after balloon angioplasty. Collaboration with Carla Taylor, a researcher in the foods and nutrition department, expanded research efforts to include studies of natural products that prevent the onset of vascular disease due to metabolic dysfunction associated with obesity. Dr. Zahradka has served as the director of the Canadian Centre for Agri-Food Research in Health and Medicine and has held various positions in the university's physiology and pathophysiology department.
