Biography

Peter Zandstra graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering degree from McGill University in Chemical Engineering and obtained his Ph.D. degree from the University of British Columbia in Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology. He further advanced his research training as a Post-Doctoral Fellow in Bioengineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In July 2017, Zandstra joined the University of British Columbia as the Founding Director of the School of Biomedical Engineering and Director of the Michael Smith Laboratories. His roles involve building programs that apply technological innovation to biology and educating the next generation of biotechnology leaders. In addition to his academic roles, Zandstra is involved in founding several biotechnology companies such as ExCellThera and Notch Therapeutics. His research aims to understand how functional tissue forms from stem cells, and this information is applied to design novel therapeutic technologies based on living cells. Zandstra has received significant recognition for his work, including being a Canada Research Chair in Stem Cell Bioengineering and earning various awards and fellowships.
