Dr. Petra Brouwer

Biography

Petra Brouwer is an Assistant Professor of Architectural History at the University of Amsterdam. She specializes in the history and theory of modern architecture and urban planning, focusing particularly on the 19th-century production and circulation of architectural knowledge, the canonization processes, and the identity of architecture at national and local levels. Her research interests also encompass the impact of everyday architecture on urban identity and town planning in the post-war period, particularly in the context of Dutch cities. She graduated cum laude from the University of Amsterdam, where she also received her PhD from the Free University of Amsterdam. Brouwer's dissertation, 'The Laws of Architecture. Dutch Architectural Handbooks in the Nineteenth Century,' published in 2011, has garnered significant recognition, including a shortlist for the Karel van Mander Prize in 2016. As a frequent guest lecturer, she contributes to various architectural and cultural debates and serves on several advisory boards including the Amsterdam School of Historical Studies. She has received multiple research grants, attesting to her involvement and influence in the field of architectural history.
