Biography

Petra Vértes leads the Systems Neuroscience Lab at the University of Cambridge's Department of Psychiatry, focusing on interdisciplinary research that intersects psychiatry, neuroscience, and applied mathematics. Her work integrates computational modeling and large-scale data analysis to uncover biological principles underlying brain organization, function, and dysfunction. Professor Vértes has a particular interest in the mechanisms underlying neurodevelopmental disorders, examining these from the genetic level to cellular, brain network, and behavioral scales. Alongside human studies, her lab explores simpler model organisms such as C. elegans and cerebral organoids to serve as testbeds for methodological innovation, thereby providing insights into fundamental aspects of brain development, organization, network dysfunction, and repair. The ultimate goal of her research is to develop a deeper mechanistic understanding of the brain to inform novel approaches for diagnosing and treating psychiatric and neurological disorders.
