Petrine Wellendorph graduated with a Master of Pharmacy from the University of Pharmaceutical Sciences (now University of Copenhagen) in 2001 and completed her PhD studies in molecular pharmacology from 2002 to 2006 under Dr. Hans Bräuner-Osborne. Her research initially focused on orphan G protein-coupled receptors, particularly GPRC6A, which included the generation of GPRC6A knock-out mice. She extended her expertise through a six-month visit to the University of Basel in Switzerland. In 2006, Wellendorph began working on elucidating the pharmacological role of gamma-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB), a compound known for its dual role in drug abuse and as a treatment for narcolepsy. Following a guest scientist position at the University of Sydney, she returned to the University of Copenhagen where she became an associate professor in 2010. Her current research focuses primarily on the brain targets of GHB and GABA and she has received significant funding from the Lundbeck Foundation for her innovative research on GHB analogs. Wellendorph is a member of the Young Academy of Sciences at the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters and has held various editorial and organizational roles in scientific communities.
