Petros Andrikopoulos is an Assistant Professor at Imperial College London specializing in Host–Microbiome Interactions. He completed his PhD at Imperial College London and the Institute of Cancer Research in Cell and Molecular Biology, focusing on how ion channel transporter activities influence angiogenesis. Following his doctoral studies, he held postdoctoral positions at the William Harvey Research Institute (QMUL), where he investigated cellular models and in vivo pharmacology to develop strategies to protect kidneys from scarring, particularly in diabetic nephropathy. In 2019, he returned to Imperial College as a Senior Postdoctoral Fellow, where he focused on the effects of microbial metabolites on kidney health. In 2022, he received a Wellcome Trust ISSF Fellowship, which allowed him to further develop his independent research. In 2023, he was awarded the MRC Career Development Award to establish his own laboratory. His research explores how chemical messengers produced by the gut microbiome affect host biology at the molecular level, with particular interest in how these interactions influence kidney function and metabolic disease risk factors. His approach combines large-scale epidemiological studies with in vitro and in vivo validation models to establish causality. He welcomes students and postdocs interested in his work to get in touch.
