Biography

Phaik Yeong Cheah is a professor and bioethicist in Global Health at the University of Oxford. She heads the Bioethics and Engagement team at the Mahidol Oxford Tropical Medicine Research Unit (MORU) and is known for her work in addressing ethical issues in clinical trials, particularly involving vulnerable populations. Her research focuses on the ethical implications of conducting research with underserved groups, including children, migrants, and refugees. Phaik Yeong has initiated several community engagement activities in Southeast Asia that promote ethical research practices. Notable projects include establishing public advisory boards and science theatre programmes, as well as leading the 'Village Drama Malaria' project, which won the 2019 University of Oxford Vice Chancellor’s Choice Award for Public Engagement. She is co-Principal Investigator on a project addressing antimicrobial resistance and serves on the Steering Committee of the Global Forum on Bioethics Research. Cheah has a background in Pharmacy and Bioethics, having earned her degrees from Universiti Sains Malaysia and participated in Erasmus Mundus. She has also coordinated a multi-centre clinical trial during her PhD studies. In 2022, she was recognized among Asia's influential leaders.
