Biography

Phil Alexander is a musician, composer, and academic associated with the Reid School of Music at the Edinburgh College of Art. His musical life encompasses a wide range of genres, including jazz, Latin, klezmer, and traditional European musics. His research prominently focuses on Jewish klezmer and Yiddish music in Europe, having published a monograph with Oxford University Press in 2021. He is also preparing a book on Jewish musical life in Scotland during the early 20th century. Additionally, he leads a Latin band as well as a klezmer band. His academic interests include Jewish music, particularly klezmer, and the relationship between traditional and contemporary music, as well as how place and space influence musical expressions. He is involved in PhD supervision, guiding topics related to Jewish music and traditional music.
