Dr. Phil Choo

Biography

Phil Choo is a professor in the Department of Graphic Design at the Stuckeman School, having served as the department head from 2019 to 2022. During his tenure, he played a crucial role in transitioning the graphic design program and crafting a new undergraduate curriculum, including the Penn State Graphic Design Affiliate Program for alumni. His research interests include the evolution of 21st-century design curricula, especially in preparing the next generation of designers for a dynamic landscape. He is engaged in exploring system and service design, with a focus on user-centric systems. Choo specializes in branding and user experience design and was recognized as the Oklahoma State Riata Center Entrepreneurship Faculty Fellow of the Year in 2017. His expertise also encompasses virtual and mixed reality through collaboration with the Oklahoma State Mixed Reality Lab. As a freelance designer and consultant, he has made significant contributions to print and UX/UI design for various clients. His achievements have earned him recognition from esteemed organizations like the University & College Designers Association, Graphis, and the Indigo Design Awards. Choo holds an M.F.A. from Iowa State University with an emphasis on visual communication and human interaction design, and has contributed to academia by teaching at several universities including Oklahoma State University and the University of the Pacific.
