Phil Uttley is an Associate Professor at the University of Amsterdam's Anton Pannekoek Institute for Astronomy. He completed his PhD at the University of Southampton in 2000 and held postdoctoral fellowships at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center before returning to Southampton as an Assistant Professor under the STFC Advanced Fellowship in 2007. Phil joined the Faculty of the Anton Pannekoek Institute in 2011. His research focuses on using X-ray variability to understand accreting black hole systems and stellar mass X-ray binaries as well as supermassive black holes in active galactic nuclei. He has published more than 130 papers in this area to date. Currently, he is developing new methods and models to understand the structure of the innermost regions of accreting black hole systems and pioneered the ‘X-ray reverberation mapping’ technique to study these regions through echoing signals. Phil is actively involved in new X-ray observatory concepts and co-chairs the Strong Field Gravity Working Group for the proposed Enhanced X-ray Timing Polarimetry (eXTP) mission. His teaching includes Masters courses on Accretion of Compact Objects and Statistical Methods.
