Biography

Philip G. Alston is the John Norton Pomeroy Professor of Law at New York University School of Law. His work focuses on international law, human rights law, and economic social rights, with a particular emphasis on the human rights implications of neoliberal economic policies, climate change, artificial intelligence, and poverty elimination. He has served as the editor-in-chief of the European Journal of International Law from 1996 to 2007 and again from 2014 to 2020. Alston has held prominent roles, including UN Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights and UN Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial executions from 2004 to 2010. He has been a member of the Security Council Commission of Inquiry on the Central African Republic and has contributed significantly to children's rights as UNICEF's senior legal adviser. His legal education includes multiple advanced degrees from the University of California at Berkeley School of Law and the University of Melbourne. Alston is recognized as an Officer of the Order of Australia and has received various awards for his contributions to international law and human rights.
