Philip Anderton has been interested in eyes, optics, and vision since childhood. His fascination began at age 14 when he personally experienced the clinical tests used by optometrists to measure vision and optical refraction. This experience inspired him to become an optometrist. He graduated with a degree in Optometry in 1970 and later completed both MSc and PhD degrees. He has been a member of the Optometry staff at the University of New South Wales since 1978. His research covers various areas, including visual ergonomics, retinal physiology and pharmacology, tear film rheology biochemistry, and the socioeconomics of rural healthcare access in Australia. He has also served in advisory roles for both State and Federal Governments on matters concerning the optometry profession, glaucoma, and rural eye vision care. Notably, he was a foundation member of the Board of the Cooperative Research Centre for Eye Research Technology, where he developed an innovative system for postgraduate review. He was responsible for introducing postgraduate education in Ocular Therapeutics prescribing at UNSW Optometry in the 1990s.
