Dr. Philip Auslander

Biography

Philip Auslander is a Professor in the School of Literature, Media, and Communication at Georgia Tech, having joined the faculty in 1987. He teaches primarily in Performance Studies and Popular Musicology, focusing on the intersections of these disciplines, including an annual Film Acting Workshop. His research interests encompass gender identity in performance, media documentation, and the culture of popular music. Auslander has published nine books, with his most recent publications including 'Women Rock! Portraits of Popular Music' (2023), 'Liveness: Performance in a Mediatized Culture' (2023), and 'Concert: Performing Musical Persona' (2021). He has also contributed extensively to the field of performance documentation and cultural politics through works such as 'Presence and Resistance' (1992) and 'Performing Glam Rock' (2006). Furthermore, Auslander has a rich background as a freelance art writer and has engaged in the production of film, exemplified by his role in the short film 'Dr. Blues,' which premiered at the Peachtree Village International Film Festival in 2019. He holds a Ph.D. in Theatre from Cornell University and continues to impact the field of Performance Studies.
