Philip Barber is a Professor of Neurology at the University of Calgary, where he directs the Calgary Stroke Prevention Clinic and is a member of the Calgary Stroke Program. He earned his medical degree from Sheffield University Medical School in 1991 and completed fellowship training focused on clinical experimental stroke research under the mentorship of Dr. Alastair Buchan. Barber obtained his Doctorate of Medicine Degree from the University of Sheffield in the UK in 2005. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada and the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. His primary research interests include the evolution of acute stroke, biomarkers, MRI surrogates of cerebrovascular disease, neurodegeneration, and conducting longitudinal case control studies. As the Principal Investigator for the Predementia Neuroimaging Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA) study, he focuses on the preclinical detection of dementia in high-risk individuals. His work employs magnetic resonance neuroimaging and cerebrospinal fluid outcome measures to explore the impacts of vascular risk factors on stroke and the structural changes in the brain that lead to atrophy in both healthy populations and patients who have experienced transient ischemic attacks. Barber is also a member of the Vascular Cognitive Impairment Team under Canada's National Research Strategy for Dementia and the Canadian Consortium on Neurodegeneration and Aging. His research contributions have been recognized with the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada Henry Barnett Scholarship in 2005 and the University of Calgary Innovator Award in the same year.
