Dr. Philip Bevilacqua

Biography

Philip Bevilacqua is a Distinguished Professor in the Eberly College of Science at Penn State University, where he leads research in RNA biology, focusing on understanding the molecular mechanisms governing RNA structure, function, and interactions. His lab has made significant contributions to the understanding of ribozymes, demonstrating the roles of nucleobases in proton transfer and establishing pathways for RNA cleavage. The Bevilacqua lab is particularly interested in exploring how RNAs fold in vivo and studying the evolutionary implications of RNA folding dynamics. Bevilacqua's research includes investigating RNA's involvement in early Earth conditions and how these processes may have contributed to the emergence of life. His accolades include the Edward W. Morley Medal and recognition as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He has also been honored with multiple keynote invitations and teaching awards throughout his career, reflecting his commitment to both research and education. Bevilacqua obtained his B.S. from John Carroll University and his Ph.D. from the University of Rochester, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Colorado, Boulder. He continues to mentor students and collaborate across disciplines to enhance the understanding of RNA's essential role in biological systems.
