Biography

Philip Calder is the Head of the School of Human Development and Health and Professor of Nutritional Immunology in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Southampton. He is an internationally recognized researcher in metabolism and the functionality of fatty acids, with an emphasis on the roles of omega-3 fatty acids and their influence on diet, nutrients, and immune inflammatory responses. His research addresses life course and translational considerations, utilizing cell and animal models, as well as studies in healthy humans and patients. Professor Calder's work has garnered numerous awards, including the American Oil Chemists’ Society Ralph T. Holman Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015, the prestigious Danone International Prize in Nutrition in 2016, and the DSM Lifetime Achievement Prize in Human Nutrition in 2017. He has held various leadership roles, including President of the International Society for the Study of Fatty Acids and Lipids from 2009 to 2012, and Chair of the Scientific Committee of the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism from 2012 to 2016. He is currently the President of the Federation of European Nutrition Societies (2019-2023) and served as Editor-in-Chief of the British Journal of Nutrition from 2006 to 2013. With over 800 scientific publications, he is recognized as a Highly Cited Researcher.
