Biography

Philip Cowen is a Professor at the University of Oxford, where he has been a significant figure in the field of Psychopharmacology since 1997. He trained in medicine at University College Hospital, London and in psychiatry at King’s College Hospital. His research has primarily focused on the biochemistry and treatment of mood disorders, with a particular emphasis on the pharmacological management of resistant depression. He is a senior author of the Shorter Oxford Textbook Psychiatry (2017) and his recent work investigates the biochemical changes associated with depression and the neurobiological risk factors for young people at risk of developing depression. His group employs various brain imaging methods and neuropsychological techniques to elucidate brain changes related to depression and to explore the effects of psychotropic drugs.
