Biography

Prior to arriving at Manchester, Philip Grange held positions as Professor of Composition at Exeter University (1989-2000), Fellow in Creative Arts at Trinity College, Cambridge (1985-87), and Northern Arts Composer Fellow at Durham University (1988-89). His principal composition teachers included Sir Peter Maxwell Davies and Professor David Blake. Grange has contributed significantly to contemporary British music, touring Taiwan under the sponsorship of the British Council in 1997, and taking a residency at Chiao-Tung University in 2000. He was a featured composer at the Music Factory Festival in Bergen, Norway in 2002, and at the TWCAT Conference in Taiwan in 2003. His compositions have been performed at prestigious festivals in Germany and Denmark. Grange's works include the Clarinet Concerto, which was featured at the WASBE Conference in Ireland in 2007, among others. Notable compositions include Cimmerian Nocturne (1979), Variations, and Labyrinthine Images, commissioned works that have been performed internationally. Additionally, Grange has completed multiple BBC commissions and has several commercial CDs to his credit, showcasing his wind and brass compositions published by Edition Peters and Maecenas.
