Dr. Philip Hughes

Biography

Philip Hughes is a Professor of Physical Geography at the University of Manchester. His academic background includes a PhD in Geography from the University of Cambridge, focusing on the Quaternary glaciation of the Pindus Mountains in Northwest Greece. He has held multiple positions at the University of Manchester, including Reader and Senior Lecturer in Physical Geography, as well as having extensive experience as a postdoctoral researcher and lecturer at both Cambridge and Manchester. His research interests encompass the glacial history of Mediterranean mountains, including the Atlas Mountains, and extend to the Pleistocene glacial history of regions such as Montenegro, Croatia, and Wales. He has made significant contributions to understanding the spatial and temporal dynamics of glacial systems and their broader paleoclimatic implications. Hughes has received numerous accolades for his research, including the prestigious Peter Fleming Award from the Royal Geographical Society. His work contributes to key environmental issues and is aligned with UN Sustainable Development Goals, focusing on climate change and glacier dynamics in various contexts.
