Biography

Philip Jerand is an Associate Professor in Archaeology, specializing in geoarchaeology at Umeå University. He has a B.A. in Archaeology and an M.A. in Environmental Archaeology, both from Umeå University. In 2023, he successfully defended his doctoral thesis. His research primarily focuses on geoarchaeological analyses of soils and sediments, and he has extensive experience in contract archaeology, having worked with museums and companies in northern Sweden and northern Norway, as well as along the Scandinavian west coast. Jerand is also involved in various aspects of cultural heritage and works with administrative agencies at both regional and national levels. In addition to his research, he is committed to teaching at the university, where he instructs courses on the bachelor’s level as part of the campus-based archaeology program, as well as stand-alone internet courses. His teaching includes modules dealing with the Mesolithic and Neolithic periods in northern Scandinavia, environmental archaeology, and sustainability in cultural heritage management. He is also involved in field and laboratory methodology courses within the Master’s program in environmental archaeology.
