Philip Jones studied Natural Sciences at Cambridge University, graduating in 1995. He obtained his MSc in Applied Optics from Imperial College and his DPhil in Atomic Laser Physics from Oxford University. Between 2001 and 2004, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the Laser Cooling Group at University College London (UCL). In 2004, he became the head of the Optical Tweezers Group, where he applies optical trapping methods to biological and soft matter nanoscale systems.
