Biography

Philip Khoury is a political and social historian of the Middle East, educated at Sidwell Friends School, American University of Beirut, Trinity College, and Harvard University, where he obtained his PhD in 1980. He joined the MIT History Faculty in 1981 and has served as Dean of the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences, as well as vice provost overseeing MIT’s non-curricular arts programs. His notable publications include 'Urban Notables and Arab Nationalism,' 'Syria and the French Mandate,' 'Tribes and State Formation in the Middle East,' and 'Modern Middle East: A Reader.' He has held significant leadership positions, including chairman of the Board of Trustees at the American University of Beirut and president of the Middle East Studies Association (MESA). Khoury is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and has received numerous fellowships and honorary degrees for his contributions to Middle Eastern studies and the humanities.
