Dr. Philip Martin

Biography

Philip Martin is a Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Analytical Science at the University of Manchester. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in Chemistry from the University of Oxford and a PhD in Physical Chemistry from the University of Cambridge, where he worked under the supervision of Professor Paul Davies. He held a Royal Society European Fellowship at Université de Paris-Sud and spent several years at the University of Basel in Switzerland focusing on laser spectroscopy of free radicals and molecular ions. In 1993, he took up a position at the University of Huddersfield, where he developed techniques in applied spectroscopy and environmental technology utilizing novel laser sources. He moved to Manchester in 2002 and currently serves as the Head of Social Responsibility within the Department. Throughout his career, Philip has developed a significant research focus on process data analytics, laser absorption spectroscopy, and industrial data analytics. He is a fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Institute of Physics, and he has been recognized as a Chartered Engineer. Philip has led research initiatives that bridge academic and industrial sectors, particularly in laser analytics and non-thermal plasma technology. His work aligns with several UN Sustainable Development Goals.
