Dr. Philip Napoli

Biography

Philip M. Napoli is the James R. Shepley Distinguished Professor of Public Policy at Duke University's Sanford School of Public Policy, where he also serves as the Director of the DeWitt Wallace Center for Media and Democracy and is a Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Research. His research delves into media institutions and media regulation policies and has involved providing expert testimony to various governmental bodies including the U.S. Senate and the Federal Communications Commission. He has authored four books and published over 50 articles in legal, public policy, journalism, and communication journals. His notable works include "Audience Economics" and "Public Interest: Media Regulation in the Disinformation Age." Over the years, Napoli has received awards from multiple organizations for his contributions to the field. His current research, funded by the Democracy Fund, focuses on developing new measures for assessing the health of local journalism ecosystems. He emphasizes the importance of engaged scholarship and has collaborated with a variety of organizations, including the Federal Communications Commission and the Minority Media & Telecommunications Council.
