Biography

Philip J. "PJ" Pettis is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at Michigan State University. His research focuses on how sexual orientation, race/ethnicity, gender, age, and socioeconomic status intersect to shape social, economic, and health inequalities. Pettis utilizes theoretical insights from medical sociology and the sociology of sexualities, race, gender, social networks, and social psychology to examine critical research questions. He investigates how social identities influence individuals' interpretations of heterosexism and how these perspectives shape life outcomes for both individuals and social groups. Additionally, he explores the interplay between social networks and various contextual factors that contribute to social inequalities, particularly for sexual minorities with diverse identities. His methodological approach includes analyzing nationally representative survey data, conducting social network analysis, in-depth qualitative interviews, and ethnographic research. His co-authored work has been published in notable journals such as the Journal of Health and Social Behavior and Social Science & Medicine. Pettis has received national recognition for his research through funding from multiple agencies, including the American Association Minority Fellowship Program. He is also a dedicated educator who has been honored with several teaching awards, including the Outstanding Graduate Student Teaching Assistant Award and the Sociology Graduate Teaching Award. Before his academic career, he spent six years engaged in applied social work and research focused on HIV/AIDS community-based interventions.
