Pettis has received national recognition for his research through funding from multiple agencies, including the American Association Minority Fellowship Program. He is also a dedicated educator who has been honored with several teaching awards, including the Outstanding Graduate Student Teaching Assistant Award and the Sociology Graduate Teaching Award.
