Biography

Tongji Philip Qian is a multidisciplinary artist and co-founder of TPQ Studio, whose artistic practice examines the limits of art-making through conceptual lenses of speed, labor, internationalism, and immigration. Rooted in images and words, Qian's research delves into knowledge production in contemporary art, focusing on movements such as Minimalism, Post-Minimalism, and Conceptual Art. His recent projects include 'No-risk Hour' (2019-), 'Neighborly Passport Keep Right Pass' (2023), 'Questionnairing Reality' (2021), and 'Art Single Handshake' (2020). Qian's drawings and paintings are part of permanent collections at the RISD Museum, Mecklenburgisches Künstlerhaus Schloss Plüschow, and Yangdeng Art Museum. Additionally, artist books are housed in public collections across various institutions. He holds dual B.A. degrees in Art History and Mathematics from Carleton College, an Advanced Graduate Certificate in Studio Art from New York University, and an M.F.A. from the Rhode Island School of Design. Qian has taught at Bard College and the Rhode Island School of Design and currently serves as a Collegiate Assistant Professor and Harper-Schmidt Fellow at the University of Chicago. In spring 2024, he will inaugurate the State VIII Project, a quasi research-driven project space at the Hyde Park Art Center in Chicago, which will feature two-person exhibitions and an Artist Writer Residency Program.
