Biography

Philip Verhagen is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, specializing in computer applications, quantitative methods, and archaeology with a strong emphasis on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and spatial analysis modeling. He has held the position of post-doctoral research fellow at the same institution from 2009 to 2017. Verhagen has worked as a GIS specialist for various Dutch companies in archaeology from 1992 to 2008. He served as the Publication Officer for the Computer Applications and Quantitative Methods group from 2011 to 2016 and is currently the Managing Editor of the Journal of Computer Applications in Archaeology since 2018. His research focuses on the methodological and theoretical aspects of spatial analysis modeling in landscape archaeology, including archaeological predictive modeling and settlement pattern analysis. He is involved in significant research projects, including 'Finding the Limits of the Limes', aiming to reconstruct and understand the cultural landscape of the Dutch part of the Roman frontier through simulation modeling. Additionally, he has contributed to improving guidelines for archaeological heritage management in the Netherlands based on research effectiveness. Verhagen is actively teaching a variety of courses related to digital archaeology and has been involved in multiple grant projects that support innovative research in the field.
