Philipp Benz studied biology at Technical University of Braunschweig, graduating in 2003. He conducted his thesis research in the laboratory of Professor Crawford at the University of California, San Diego, before obtaining his PhD at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich in 2009 under Professor Soll in the Department of Biochemistry and Physiology of Plants. Following his doctorate, he became a postdoctoral fellow at the Energy Biosciences Institute at the University of California, Berkeley, where he worked with filamentous fungi. In 2014, he returned to Germany and successfully passed the tenure track phase at the Technical University of Munich, advancing to Associate Professor in August 2020. His research focuses on processes by which filamentous fungi degrade biomass, particularly emphasizing on wood as a substrate. He is interested in biorefineries that utilize wood as renewable feedstock and the development of novel fungicides. Benz aims to understand how fungi perceive and adapt to the composition of plant cell walls at a molecular level, leveraging insights for the rational design of genetically engineered fungal strains to optimize biomass utilization in the context of a circular bioeconomy.
