Biography

Philipp obtained postdoctoral qualification (habilitation) in 2022 at the University of Zurich with a thesis on trade, entrepreneurship, and translocal livelihoods in Eurasia, particularly Kyrgyzstan, Russia, and China. He was previously a member of the research group 'Integration Conflict' at the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology in Halle/Saale from 2006 to 2012, and has served as a postdoctoral researcher and lecturer at Humboldt University of Berlin from 2013 to 2017 and at the University of Freiburg from 2017 to 2022. He received his PhD in 2012 from Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, where he researched youth cultures, identity, and urban change in Kyrgyzstan's capital, Bishkek. In January 2023, Philipp became an Associate Professor of Anthropology at Nazarbayev University in Astana, Kazakhstan. He is also a research affiliate at the International Security Development Center (ISDC) in Berlin, Germany, and has worked as an expert for ISDC, conducting research and consulting on projects related to development cooperation in Central Asia with various agencies, including the World Bank, UN Women, UNICEF, USAID, and the German Federal Foreign Office (AA).
