Biography

Philipp Seuferling joined the School of Critical Studies as a Lecturer in Communications in August 2025. He holds a Ph.D. in Media Communication Studies from Södertörn University, Stockholm, Sweden (2021). Prior to joining the University of Glasgow, he was a Fellow at the Department of Media and Communications at the London School of Economics (LSE) from 2022 to 2025 and a Visiting Scholar at the Department of Media, Culture, and Communication at New York University, USA (2022). His research interests include the historical and contemporary intersections of media, technologies, and migration, particularly examining automated border regimes and their implications. He is currently completing a monograph entitled 'Encampment: Media History and Humanitarianism,' which explores the archival accounts of German refugee camps from 1945 and discusses the media communications surrounding modern Western refugee regimens. Ongoing projects involve investigation into smartness and automation at Ellis Island and the history of kinship surveillance through DNA testing in migration contexts. He offers supervision for prospective PhD researchers in media communication studies and critical migration studies.
