Biography

Philipp Trotter is an Honorary Research Associate at the Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment at the University of Oxford. His research focuses on electrification in sub-Saharan Africa, specifically addressing technical aspects of energy planning, optimization, quantitative, and qualitative policy analyses and design. His current research project involves engaging public and private energy sector stakeholders and rural communities in Uganda and Zambia to understand domestically driven rural electrification. With years of experience in the energy sector in emerging economies, he has previously worked with large-scale energy utilities across Africa, Asia, and Europe as a consultant for McKinsey & Company. He has also served as a Globalizer Advisor for Ashoka International, where he contributed to developing scale-up strategies for social businesses across the same regions. Philipp studied for his PhD in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Bath and holds a Diplom degree in Energy Engineering from RWTH Aachen University, where he graduated with Distinction, as well as an MSc in Politics of the Developing World from the London School of Economics, also with Distinction.
