Dr. Philippa Browning

Biography

Philippa Browning is a Professor of Astrophysics at the University of Manchester, specifically at the Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics within the School of Physics and Astronomy. Her research focuses on the theory and modeling of solar and fusion plasmas, addressing key areas such as magnetohydrodynamics, magnetic reconnection, and particle acceleration in solar flares. With degrees in Mathematics and Applied Mathematics from Cambridge and St Andrews, respectively, she has built a distinguished career with roles as a Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, and Professor since joining Manchester in 2004. Browning has contributed significantly to various professional bodies, including the Institute of Physics and the Royal Astronomical Society, and she has served on editorial boards and research panels. Her research interests encompass the dynamics of solar coronal heating, numerical simulations of nonlinear kink instabilities, and the connection between magnetic reconnection and high energy particles. Additionally, she has been involved in collaborative projects focused on fusion studies, linking solar physics with magnetically-confined fusion plasma research.
