Professor Philippa A.S. Reed is a Professor of Structural Materials at the University of Southampton. She graduated BA (Hons) in Materials Science Metallurgy from Cambridge University in 1985 and received her Ph.D. on brittle failure in nuclear pressure vessel steels, with sponsorship from Rolls Royce Associates. Her post-doctoral research at Cambridge focused on fatigue failure in aerospace turbine disc materials and was also supported by Rolls Royce DRA Aerospace, Farnborough. In 1992, she joined the University of Southampton as a lecturer after spending six months as a SERC Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Oxford University. Philippa has held various positions at the university, including Senior Lectureship in 1999, Readership in 2002, and professorial status in 2006. She was elected a Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals, and Mining in 2009 and served as Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department from 2015 to 2022. Her research expertise includes high-temperature oxidation, creep fatigue processes in nickel-based turbine disc blade alloys, and fatigue mitigation prediction approaches for turbine blades. Professor Reed has collaborated with industry partners such as EDF, Rolls Royce, and TWI, which reflects her active engagement in research that addresses critical issues in materials science within the engineering sector.
