Biography

Philippe M. Frowd is an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Studies at the University of Ottawa. His research focuses on the transnational governance of security, with particular emphasis on technologies, border control, and migration management. He is involved in parallel projects examining the impact of automation and digitalization on border security in Canada, such as electronic visas and airport kiosks. His work extends to the political dynamics of security intervention in the G5 Sahel region of West Africa, as well as the roles of migrant smuggling, local militias, and border policing practices in countries like Senegal and Burkina Faso. He obtained his PhD in Political Science from McMaster University in 2015, and previously earned a Master's and Bachelor's degree in Political Science and History from the University of Ottawa. Before joining the University of Ottawa in 2018, he served as a Lecturer in International Relations at the University of York and as a Research Fellow at the University of Sheffield.
