Biography

Philippe Sands joined the Faculty of Laws at University College London in January 2002 as a Professorial Research Fellow. He serves as the Director of the Centre for International Courts and Tribunals. His teaching areas encompass public international law, the settlement of international disputes including arbitration, and environmental natural resources law. Philippe is a frequent commentator for BBC and CNN and has written for leading newspapers. He has lectured worldwide and has held positions, including Visiting Professor at the University of Toronto (2005), University of Melbourne (2005), and Université de Paris (Sorbonne) (2006, 2007). He previously worked at the School of Oriental and African Studies, Kings College London, University of Cambridge, and was a Global Professor of Law at New York University from 1995 to 2003. Additionally, he is a co-founder of the Foundation for International Environmental Law and Development, which focuses on Climate Change and Sustainable Development programs. Philippe serves on the Advisory Boards of the European Journal of International Law Review and European Community International Environmental Law. He was appointed Queen's Counsel in 2003 and has extensive experience as a practicing barrister, litigating cases before various international courts and tribunals.
