Philippe Zysset was born in Geneva and studied engineering physics at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL). He began his professional career as a research engineer at a medical implant company and later became a research fellow at the orthopaedic biomechanics laboratory of Harvard Medical School. He worked as a research assistant in the Laboratory of Applied Mechanics at EPFL and obtained his PhD in biomechanics under the supervision of Professor Alain Curnier. Subsequently, he became a postdoctoral fellow at the orthopaedic research laboratories at the University of Michigan and was appointed as an assistant professor of solid biomechanics at EPFL in 1997. In 2003, he was nominated as a professor of biomechanics at the Vienna University of Technology, where he founded the laboratory for micromechanics of biological tissues and initiated a novel master's program in biomedical engineering. In 2011, he became a professor of biomechanics at the Institute of Surgical Technology and Biomechanics at the University of Bern. His research focuses on the theoretical and experimental characterization of the hierarchical mechanical properties of biological tissues and the development of patient-specific simulation models for the musculoskeletal system.
