Biography

Phillip Gardiner is a Professor Emeritus in the Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management at the University of Manitoba. Over the course of his career, he has focused on understanding the adaptations that occur in nervous and neuromuscular systems in response to variations in physical activity levels, aging, and specific health conditions including spinal cord injury, stroke, obesity, and type 2 diabetes. His research interests are particularly geared towards the fields of electrophysiology, morphology, and gene expression as they relate to physical activity and health. Dr. Gardiner obtained his PhD in Physical Education with a focus on exercise physiology from the University of Alberta and has a significant background in physical education from the University of Windsor. In recognition of his contributions to the field, he has received several prestigious awards, including the Canada Research Chair in Physical Activity & Health Studies from 2009 to 2016 and the Honour Award from the Canadian Society of Exercise Physiology in 2007.
