Biography

Phillip M. Harter, M.D. is an Associate Professor Emeritus in Emergency Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine. He began his career in Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and disaster management and has been instrumental in the development of emergency medicine education at Stanford. Dr. Harter began teaching emergency medicine procedures to medical students in 1989 and played a significant role in developing the residency program in emergency medicine. He has contributed to statewide EMS initiatives and served as the president of the EMS Medical Directors Association of California. Dr. Harter directed several educational innovations including the co-founding of the emergency medicine simulation program and has won numerous awards for his teaching excellence, including the National Faculty Teaching Award from the American College of Emergency Physicians. His interests include medical education, particularly the use of simulation and distance learning in training healthcare professionals. He continues to influence the field through his work in curriculum development, residency education, and various EMS initiatives.
