Phillip Joseph graduated with a degree in Physics from the University of York in 1984 and completed a Master's degree at the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR), University of Southampton in 1985. He worked for a year in industry on condition health monitoring of helicopter rotor blades before returning to ISVR to begin his PhD, which he completed in 1990, focusing on active control of sound fields in enclosed spaces. He moved to Australia to work on low-frequency active sonar before returning to ISVR as a research fellow in 1994, studying active control of fan tones in aircraft turbofan engines. In 1996, he was appointed as a research lecturer in shallow water acoustics and has since been promoted to Professor of Engineering Acoustics. His research has been funded by projects from Rolls-Royce and UK Water Industry Research, among others, and he actively investigates advanced measurement techniques and control strategies to mitigate noise emissions from engineering systems.
