Biography

Phillip McCrum has been a prominent figure in the Vancouver arts community since the 1980s, working in various capacities, including curator of the Gallery from 1987 to 1989 and co-editor of BOO Magazine from 1994 to 1996. He has served as an associate board member for numerous artist-run centres. Phillip has taught in diverse communities from 1999 to 2004 and has participated in a studio residency funded by the City of Hamburg's City Art Council. He has taught in the Fine Arts Department at the University of Lethbridge and spent a year studying at the University of Ulster in Belfast, Northern Ireland. He later taught at Hangzhou University of Commerce in China, specifically in the Postgraduate Art and Design Departments. His personal art practice employs a variety of mediums, reflecting a profound interest in experimenting with new media and materials, invoking multiple exhibitions across various forms such as video, installation, sculpture, multimedia, and painting. His current research focuses on the intersection of painting and digital media, aiming to develop relationships between traditional practices and avant-garde strategies while exploring new palettes and forms of expression and representation.
