Biography

Phillip Sharp is an Institute Professor emeritus at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a member of the Department of Biology and the Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research. He joined the Center for Cancer Research in 1974 and served as its director from 1985 to 1991, later becoming head of the Department of Biology for eight years. Sharp was the founding director of the McGovern Institute from 2000 to 2004. He has authored over 500 scientific papers and has been elected to numerous prestigious organizations including the National Academy of Sciences and the Royal Society in the UK. His research focuses on molecular biology and gene expression, particularly RNA splicing mechanisms relevant to cancer. For his contributions, Sharp was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1993. His extensive service includes leadership roles in various scientific advisory boards and foundations, as well as as a co-founder of Biogen and Alnylam Pharmaceuticals, where he currently holds advisory positions. Sharp holds a BA from Union College in Kentucky and a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
